How to Light Up Your Kitchen

Cooking table

The kitchen is always a hive of activity. Whether as one of the busiest rooms in the home, or as part of a commercial restaurant, the kitchen always needs to be kept well lit when in use. There are many ways to do this, and the sheer amount of options can offer a huge variety of choice. Thankfully, there are some essential points to keep in mind. Here are some tips on how to keep a kitchen illuminated in style.

Using LED Downlights

LED downlights provide a sure-fire means of lighting up a kitchen. The ceiling recessed light sources work well in small spaces, such as between cabinets and the sink, or oven and refrigerator. LED downlights are often a good option, as they use less energy and do not give off UV. The downlights are far more durable than other downlight alternatives, meaning they won't need to be replaced as often. They also look tidy and organised in the ceiling, occupying a recessed space that doesn't distract from other parts of the room.

Cabinet lighting

Under cabinet lights provide another layer of lighting in the kitchen. A smart method of using them is to apply low-power globes below cabinets or shelves. They can be spaced out logically to provide an applied source of light ideal for food preparation. Kitchen counters need to be sufficiently illuminated for busy day-to-day use.

A common problem that cabinet lights are able to deal with is the shadow effect given off by conventional lighting methods. Under-cabinet lights bring the light much closer to the kitchen user, and offer a direct functional light home cooks. LED strip lights are cooler than other lighting sources, and can be placed behind the counter safely hidden away.

Pendant lighting

Pendant lights offer a useful means of task-lighting, and are often hung above kitchen table and benches. They can be a great way of highlighting the overall design and look of a kitchen. It is important to remember not to hang the lights too low, as any lights appearing in eye-view of a diner or kitchen user would be distracting. For that reason, make sure the lights are hung with a good amount of space – about 1 meter – above a kitchen worktop.

Avoiding clutter

To keep an over all organised look in the kitchen, it's best not to over complicate things. If you intend on using lights hanging from the ceiling, try to do so in only one style. If there are two different types of lighting competing across the space, it can look a bit messy and jumbled up. For that reason, keep things simple and well spaced out. Concentrating on the overall look of the kitchen, highlighted in a clean, warm light, should always be the goal.
